Evernia prunastri L. (Oakmoss) absolute is produced via a solvent and alcohol process from lichen that grows predominately on oak trees.
It possesses a damp green earthy aroma that softens pointy herbaceous notes into a dusty hue that I find similar to petrichor also known as the smell of rain. (the aroma that lingers in the air during and after a rainfall).
It is a terrific ingredient in natural perfumes as it works as a fixative and is a key ingredient in Fougère (French for 'fern') type perfumes especially with the addition of the sweet coumarin notes of tonka bean.
Oakmoss is not a substance used in Aromatherapy or in cosmetics, however, it has been used extensively by independent natural perfumers and in the commercial fragrance industry for over a hundred years.
Due to the fact that Oakmoss absolute is a very thick substance, I suggest that it be dissolved in small portion of 200 proof perfumer's alcohol.
Oakmoss contains a constituent known as 'atranol' which has been deemed a contact allergen. According to The International Fragrance Association and the United States Federal Drug Administration the acceptable level of Oakmoss must not exceed 0.1% of the total solution. Eden Botanicals is a reputable supplier of Oakmoss absolute.
