Who is Ishtar

Ishtar is commonly referred to as the Mesopotamian Goddess of Love and War. Many ancient societies have over lapping versions and beliefs. Ishtar was considered to be the daughter of the Sky God ‘An’ and therefore in control of thunderstorms.

She is also known to be the daughter of the Moon God known as ‘Nanna’ and the wind God ‘Enlil’. This well-known Goddess is also said to protect stores of dates, wool, meat and grains.

The Burney Relief

Research indicates that she was complex and confusing, being in control of order and chaos at the same time. She is known to wear a rainbow beaded necklace symbolizing a safe bridge from one piece of land to another, allowing her to escape during dangerous situations.
